Get to Know Dr. Scott Cohen
Dr. Scott Cohen is originally from New Rochelle, New York and is the oldest of four children. He received his primary education from New Rochelle public schools and was a highly decorated competitive swimmer. He swam for the world-renowned USS team Badger Swim Club and was voted team captain during his Junior and Senior years in addition to swimming throughout college.
It was also in high school that Dr. Cohen's love for dentistry blossomed. His mother was an artist whose main medium was oil paintings, and he credits her with developing his dexterity, artistry, and creativity. Academically, he was an honors student with a passion for studying the sciences. The combination of artist and student led him to think about a career in healthcare at a very early age, despite having no doctors in his family.
However, it wasn't until he began working as a dental assistant for his family dentist at age 16 that he realized dentistry was the only career he could seem himself happily doing. In 2002, he graduated with honors as a pre-dental student from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. He then continued his education at the New York University College of Dentistry where he completed his dream of becoming a dentist by earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2006.
A Life of Service
While most of his peers were focused solely on getting through dental school, Dr. Cohen's ambition led him to complete another lifelong dream: following his grandfather’s footsteps by serving our great country in the armed forces. In 2004, while still in dental school, he applied for and was granted a commission as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. Upon graduating NYU, he immediately began Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, beginning a 5-year active duty career as a naval officer.
During his first two years, he served on Navy bases in Fallon, Nevada and Lemoore, California while being responsible for the dental care of entire air wings that passed through for training. While a great experience, Dr. Cohen knew that a true soldier deploys during wartime. His goal wasn’t to just work behind the scenes back home or on a ship in the Persian Gulf like most medical officers. Ever since 9/11, which hit particularly close to home, Dr. Cohen wanted to serve and use his skills where he thought he was needed the most, and that was undeniably on the front lines.
Rather than accept orders to be deployed on an aircraft carrier, Dr. Cohen trained and pushed to be attached to the best of the best - the United States Marine Corps. This is an honor not granted to many Navy dentists. In 2008, his wish was granted, and he was given orders to join the USMC at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Once there, he began a rigorous yearlong program that included advanced training in oral surgery and endodontics at Navy Hospital Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and National Naval Medical Center Bethesda, Maryland as well as advanced medical and tactical training. He went on to become a Fleet Marine Forces Qualified Naval Officer. This prestigious designation meant he became part of the combined general and special forces within the Department of the Navy that perform offensive amphibious and expeditionary warfare and defensive maritime employment in support of the United States Marine Corps. Only then was he selected for deployment to Iraq with US Marine forces on the ground.
From February to September 2009, Dr. Cohen served as a triage and dental officer with Surgical Company, Second Supply Battalion. He spent his time treating fellow service members in need of both dental and medical care and participating in humanitarian missions throughout the Al Anbar province, including Al-Taqqadum, Habbaniyah, Ramadi, Baghdad, and Al Asad. As a result, Dr. Cohen earned the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as a promotion to Lieutenant Commander at only 30 years old.
Once back home, Dr. Cohen and his family made the bittersweet decision to leave active duty and complete one last dream - to open up his own dental practice, which he did in 2010.
